Vianode and FAAM advance industrial-scale closed-loop recycling of battery-grade graphite
Oslo, Norway, September 29, 2026 — Vianode, an advanced battery materials company, and leading European energy solutions provider FAAM have successfully demonstrated the recycling of graphite from battery production scrap into high-performance anode material, marking an important step toward establishing a circular value chain for battery-grade graphite.
The collaboration combines Vianode's proprietary synthetic graphite technology with FAAM's battery manufacturing expertise to address one of the battery industry's most significant circularity challenges: recovering and reusing graphite while maintaining the performance, purity, and consistency required for lithium-ion batteries.
As part of a successful development and qualification program, Vianode processed graphite concentrate recovered from FAAM's anode production scrap and converted it into recycled anode-grade graphite. Testing demonstrated electrochemical performance comparable to virgin graphite materials, confirming the potential for high-value recovery and reuse of graphite within battery manufacturing.
Building on these results, the companies are expanding their collaboration to scale the recycling process toward industrial deployment and further integrate recycled graphite into battery production operations. The objective is to enable a closed-loop solution that improves resource efficiency, reduces waste, and strengthens regional battery supply chains.
While recycling infrastructure for battery metals such as nickel, cobalt, and copper continues to advance, graphite recycling remains one of the industry's most complex challenges. Due to stringent requirements for material purity and battery performance, large-scale recovery and reuse of battery-grade graphite has remained limited. The Vianode-FAAM collaboration demonstrates a viable pathway to closing this gap.
By enabling the reuse of graphite from production scrap, the partnership contributes to lower environmental impact, improved resource utilization, and increased supply chain resilience and is supporting the continued growth of a more sustainable European battery industry.
