Vasakronan is being awarded the 2026 USGBC Leadership Award for Organizational Excellence. Presented by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the award recognises organisations whose long-term efforts and tangible results help shape future-proof cities. Vasakronan’s CEO, Johanna Skogestig, will accept the award in New York on 21 October.
Vasakronan is receiving the award for its long-term efforts to reduce its environmental and climate impact, and to drive more sustainable construction.
In its rationale, the USGBC highlights that Vasakronan certified Sweden’s first LEED-compliant building as early as 2009, helping to establish the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system in the Nordic property market. Today, 97% of Vasakronan’s investment portfolio is environmentally certified, with 96% of that rated LEED Gold or Platinum.
The USGBC also recognises the company’s work in circular construction, its introduction of green leases, now the industry standard in Sweden, and its reduction of its portfolio energy consumption from 220 kWh/sq. m. in 2009 to 65 kWh/sq. m., a 70 per cent decrease.
“This is a fantastic recognition of our joint efforts and something we should all be proud of here at Vasakronan. Sustainability has never been an afterthought for us. We are convinced it creates long-term value for our customers, for us and for society at large, which is why it must be at the heart of everything we do. This international recognition of our work strengthens our resolve and energises us to continue. A great deal remains to be done”, says Johanna Skogestig, CEO of Vasakronan.
USGBC CEO Peter Templeton highlights Vasakronan’s long-term leadership, its ambition to reach net-zero emissions across the entire value chain by 2030, and its strong commitment to safe construction sites. In his view, Vasakronan’s work shows how the property sector can combine value creation with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and accelerate the transition to future-proof cities.
The USGBC Leadership Awards recognise organisations whose work helps drive a broader transition to a more sustainable built environment. The award will be presented on 21 October at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in New York.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the organisation behind LEED, an international system for the environmental certification of buildings. Its work aims to transform how buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, creating a more environmentally and socially responsible built environment.
