Sensys Gatso, Through NTMEL Joint Venture, Will Support the Launch of Ghana’s Major Road Safety Program on October 1
The new automated enforcement program will help address the growing human and economic toll of traffic crashes on Ghana’s roads.
Sensys Gatso Group, a global leader in traffic safety solutions built on trusted innovation, through its joint venture Nationwide Traffic Management & Enforcement Ltd (NTMEL), will support the launch and ongoing operation of Ghana’s Traffitech-GH National Road Safety program. The country is expected to begin live citation issuance on October 1st.
Sensys Gatso is a shareholder in NTMEL, which was formed to assist the Government of Ghana with establishing a national road safety program under an eleven-year contract signed in December 2022. Over the last several years, NTMEL has worked in close cooperation with the Ghana Police Service and other government stakeholders to implement the program called Traffitech-GH, which will utilize Sensys Gatso hardware and software to provide lifesaving automated traffic enforcement. Live citation issuance is expected to begin on October 1, following a sensitization and testing period designed to ensure public acceptance and program integrity.
“With the revision of the Road Traffic Act and the passing of the 2026 Road Traffic Regulations, we now have a solid regulatory foundation for the program to commence,” said Edmar van der Weijden, Managing Director of NTMEL. “With the support of our public sector partners, we have worked tenaciously for several years towards this moment.”
Improving traffic safety is a serious and growing challenge in Ghana, an issue Sensys Gatso’s automated enforcement safety systems are designed to help address. According to government data, 2,949 people died in road traffic crashes across the country in 2025, up from 2,494 in 2024, an increase of 18.2%. Beyond the tragic human toll, road crashes also create a substantial economic burden. A World Bank report from August 2026 estimated the cost of road crash fatalities and serious injuries in Ghana at $4.55 billion annually, equivalent to approximately 2.1% of GDP. As the technology provider to NTMEL with proven methodologies and unique experience in Vision Zero strategies, Sensys Gatso will play an important role in improving safety on Ghana’s road network.

Total contract revenues for the joint venture over the remaining contract term are estimated at SEK 600 million, with Sensys Gatso’s shareholding entitling the company to a 40% profit share. After go-live, the program will enter a ramp-up period requiring additional investment in NTMEL from Sensys Gatso and its joint venture partner for program assets and to support ongoing operations. Following this ramp-up period, the joint venture is expected to generate positive results.
