Patria has successfully demonstrated the remote operation of a Patria AMV armoured vehicle in Finland from a remote operating desk in Tokyo, a distance of more than 7,800 kilometres. Hosted by the Embassy of Finland in Japan on August 25–26 the demonstration combined drive-by-wire vehicle technology, secure 5G connectivity and real-time situational awareness into an integrated remote-operation concept.
The Patria AMV was positioned at the Parola military testing area in Finland, while the operator controlled it from Tokyo. The demonstration showcased secure long-distance remote operation enabled by resilient data links, advanced situational awareness, and a modern armoured vehicle platform with latest technology drive-by-wire capabilities. The same operating concept can support future applications such as unmanned logistics operations, convoying, and autonomous waypoint navigation.
"The demonstrations were a great success, drawing a large number of attendees from the Japan Ministry of Defence and defence-related companies. This event reflects the strong interest in Patria’s remote driving capabilities in Japan and internationally, as well as the confidence placed in our local partner, the Japan Steel Works," says Janne Räkköläinen, Patria’s Vice President, Market Area World.
Remote operation requires a reliable understanding of the vehicle, its surroundings and the wider operating environment. During the demonstration, Patria DOME provided real-time situational awareness, complemented by ICEYE satellite data. Additional technologies from Nokia, SAVOX and Basemark supported communications and visual awareness. Operational data transfer was enabled through secure connectivity solutions provided by Telia.
Patria has been developing unmanned and remotely operated capabilities across multiple domains for several years and continues to advance next-generation technologies, including AI-enabled solutions. The Tokyo–Finland demonstration highlights the AMV platform’s potential as a modular and future-ready foundation for remote operation and higher levels of autonomy, while demonstrating the value of cooperation between defence technology companies, telecommunications providers and situational-awareness specialists.
