Lex, the audiobook studio and publisher building cinematic audio for books, partners with Epidemic Sound as its primary music partner, integrating the full catalog into its production pipeline via the Epidemic Sound API to score titles with music, ambience, and sound effects cleared for commercial release.
Stockholm, Sweden, September 14 – Epidemic Sound, the world’s leading soundtracking platform powering over 3.5 billion video views daily across TikTok and YouTube, and Lex, the audiobook studio and publisher building cinematic audio, today announced a partnership that will see Epidemic Sound become Lex’s primary music partner, integrating its full catalog directly into the Lex production pipeline via the Epidemic Sound API. Lex is the first AI-scored audiobook studio to be built on the Epidemic Sound catalog, and the partnership establishes Epidemic Sound as the creative and rights backbone behind a new category of audiobook production.
Scoring at scale through the Epidemic Sound API
Plain narration has become the baseline for audiobook production. What distinguishes a title is a full score: music, ambience, and sound effects placed under the voice and cleared for commercial release. That is the difference between generated audio and a finished production.
Through the Epidemic Sound API, Lex draws on a catalog of over 300,000 tracks and sound effects, including over 55,000 tracks from world-class artists and over 250,000 Hollywood-grade sound effects, directly within its own production workflow. The integration allows music, ambience, and sound effects to be selected and placed title by title, at the volume a publishing schedule demands, without leaving the Lex pipeline. As Lex’s primary music partner, Epidemic Sound sits at the heart of every title the studio produces.
Because Epidemic Sound owns 100% of the rights to its music, every Lex title can be published across Audible, Spotify, Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, libraries, and other platforms without licensing complexity, complications, or takedowns.
Every Lex title runs through licensed voice models, the licensed Epidemic Sound music and sound effects catalog, and a human pass for performance and mastering.
David Mainayar, CEO at Lex, commented: “Every publishing format is shrinking except audio. People are busier than ever and want to consume good books while doing other things. The problem is traditional human narration costs authors thousands of dollars. We are using voice generation models to deliver audiobooks for indie authors at a fraction of the cost. Epidemic Sound allows us to score those productions with music and sound effects cleared for distribution on Audible, Spotify, Apple Books, and beyond.”
Cinematic audiobooks at indie economics
For listeners, a scored title lands closer to film than to a reading. For authors, the shift is economic. Studio-grade scored production has historically required a budget on the scale of a film score, putting it out of reach for most writers. Under the Lex model it becomes a one-time production fee, with authors retaining their royalties.
Together, Lex and Epidemic Sound are working to prove the viability of a new category: cinematic audiobooks produced at independent economics, with Epidemic Sound providing both the creative material and the rights framework that makes commercial release straightforward.
Rasmus Thofte, SVP B2B at Epidemic Sound, commented: “Books are becoming an audio-first format, sound is what carries a story, and a 100% IP-owned catalog delivered through the Epidemic Sound API is what allows a studio like Lex to score at scale and publish anywhere with confidence.”
