Bread that might otherwise go to waste will increasingly reach people facing financial hardship. Lantmännen Unibake, the Group’s international bakery business, has entered into a partnership with Matmissionen and has donated bread to its operations in Örebro, Stockholm and Trollhättan during the summer.
“It is rewarding to see our bread directly benefit people in vulnerable situations. At the same time, this is an important step in our efforts to reduce food waste and use our resources more responsibly,” says Frida Helgesson, Logistics Manager at Lantmännen Unibake.
Matmissionen is a chain of social supermarkets founded by Stockholm City Mission in 2015, where members with limited financial means can buy donated food at around one-third of the regular retail price. The initiative also helps reduce food waste and provides opportunities for work training.
From surplus to food
Surplus can arise in the bakery business due to changes in demand, forecast deviations, or when products are launched or discontinued. Products are sold whenever possible, but when this is not feasible, bread that is still fit for consumption can be donated to Matmissionen.
Previously, surplus bread has mainly been sent to Lantmännen Biorefineries for processing into ethanol. Through the new partnership, more of the bread can instead be used as food, according to Lantmännen.
