There is strong demand for IT expertise in digitalisation, cyber security and technology development. The Higher Vocational Education programme IT Infrastructure Technician in Ljungby, which Nordlo helps to run, provides companies with a way to secure new skills and attracts applicants from across Sweden.
“This is a profession for the future. Our customers are becoming increasingly dependent on stable and secure IT, which means we need people who understand both the technology and the business,” says Andreas Nord, Site Manager at Nordlo Ljungby.

In Ljungby, Sweden, the Higher Vocational Education programme IT Infrastructure Technician has become part of the effort to meet the growing demand for IT expertise, both locally and across the region. The programme is run by IRC Yrkeshögskola in close collaboration with local businesses, including Nordlo, which is also represented on the programme’s management board. Participants from various parts of Sweden are moving to Småland to take part in the programme.
“It is certainly not unusual for participants to move here specifically for the programme. I recently spoke to one participant who had moved all the way from Luleå,” says Andreas Nord, Site Manager at Nordlo Ljungby.
The programme covers areas including IT operations, networks, cloud services and cyber security, and is continuously updated to reflect the needs of the labour market. Companies from the region actively participate in the programme’s management board to ensure that the content keeps pace with developments in IT and digitalisation.
“The most important thing is that the programme remains relevant. Technology changes rapidly, and the programme needs to evolve with it. We help steer the programme towards the skills that customers and businesses are looking for.”
According to Andreas, Infrastructure Technician is very much a profession for the future.
“Technology is developing incredibly quickly today, and it can be difficult for smaller companies to keep up. Skilled technicians help businesses with their digitalisation. There will be a need for this expertise for many years to come.”
Programme creates pathways to jobs in Småland
A central part of the Higher Vocational Education programme is the workplace-based learning periods, known in Sweden as LIA, during which participants gain practical experience with companies in the region. For many, this also provides a route into their first job.
“It is quite common for participants to make valuable contacts during their LIA placement and then find employment after completing the programme. Many choose to stay here because there are good opportunities to work in both IT and industry in the region. Four of the nine IT technicians at our Ljungby office graduated from this programme.”
“We see the programme as a very effective recruitment channel. Participants graduate with a broad foundation of skills and can then go on to specialise in areas such as security or core systems.”
Andreas also emphasises that working as an infrastructure technician involves more than technical expertise.
“Customer service and the ability to explain things clearly are just as important. Technical issues can often be solved together, but the ability to make customers feel confident and supported is extremely important in this profession. It is something we try to emphasise both during the programme and throughout the LIA placements.”
The next intake of the Infrastructure Technician programme in Ljungby begins on 24 August.
