Eni Storage Systems breaks ground on factory for stationary battery production in Brindisi
Ceremony for the laying of the first stone attended by the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso. Eni and Seri Industrial's project for the creation of energy storage systems is entering the heart of Versalis' site transformation.
Brindisi, July 6, 2026 – Eni Storage Systems, a company of Eni Industrial Evolution and FIB (Seri Industrial group), today broke ground at the industrial site in Brindisi for the construction of the new integrated Italian and European hub for the production of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, primarily intended for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that support the diffusion of renewable energy and the stability of electrical grids. Specifically, these systems store energy produced by renewable sources during periods of excess production and release it when needed, thus being fundamental for managing the intermittency of renewable sources. European demand for such systems is estimated to grow from 36 GWh in 2025 to approximately 138 GWh by 2030*. In an area of the Versalis industrial plant, formerly used for polymer storage and other long-discontinued industrial activities, the ceremony for the laying of the first stone of the first integrated hub for stationary battery production was celebrated today, in the presence of the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso and local authorities.
Eni Storage Systems' development plan includes the construction in Brindisi of the gigafactory for the production of battery cells and modules, and the battery pack assembly plant (BESS). The latter will have an increased capacity, sufficient to assemble modules also coming from the Seri Industrial gigafactory in Teverola (Caserta). In the second phase, upon completion of the project, battery active cathode material (LFP) production and battery recycling activities will also be carried out in Brindisi, both sized for the two gigafactories. The project envisages a total capacity of 16 GWh/year by 2030 (half in Brindisi and half in the Teverola plant), equivalent to over 10% of the European stationary storage (BESS) market.
“Today in Brindisi, we are launching an industrial initiative that represents Eni's entry into a completely new business with high growth potential. A project aimed at supporting the transition, creating industrial and technological value, in a key sector for the decarbonization path, as it integrates the development of renewable energy with the resilience of the energy system. An investment that will give life to an innovative local supply chain, capable of generating employment and strategic autonomy from non-EU markets, reducing emissions without losing competitiveness. Our industrial transformation model, which combines greater environmental sustainability, economic competitiveness, and energy security, is concrete. And it is completed by Eni's simultaneous entry into FAENIX, the Seri Industrial group company that will market the storage systems produced in Teverola and Brindisi,” declared Giuseppe Ricci, Chief Operating Officer Industrial Transformation of Eni.
“Phases of profound transformation require courage, vision, and the ability to recognize when certain industrial models are no longer sustainable. And if the answer is an investment in an innovative, competitive activity that is central to the global energy transition, we are proud to be part of it. When change is driven by a solid industrial vision, social responsibility, and the awareness that we need to work together in our country, then we are certain that this initiative will be an extraordinary opportunity for development for Brindisi and Italy,” declared Vittorio Civitillo, CEO of Seri Industrial and CEO of FAENIX.
