Brånemark Osseointegration Centers and Koite Health enter research collaboration on preventive care in implant dentistry
The collaboration unites ABOC’s scientific heritage in osseointegration with Koite Health’s light-activated Lumoral® technology to advance the evidence base for protecting peri-implant health across the full implant journey.
Koite Health, the Finnish oral-health technology company behind Lumoral®, and the Associated Brånemark Osseointegration Centers (ABOC), the global scientific network founded on the work of Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the originator of osseointegration and modern implant dentistry, today announced a research-focused collaboration on the role of light-activated antibacterial therapy in implant-related preventive care and long-term maintenance.
The collaboration brings together ABOC’s clinical and scientific expertise in implantology with Koite Health’s home-use, light-activated antibacterial technology. Through the cooperation, the two organisations intend to work closely on the clinical understanding, documentation and communication of structured preventive care pathways for implant patients, recognising that long-term outcomes depend not only on successful surgical treatment but also on continuous home care and professional follow-up.
A shared scientific rationale
An important factor for the long-term success of dental implants is peri-implant health, which can be compromised by bacterial biofilm at the implant-tissue interface. Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis remain among the central clinical challenges in implant dentistry, and their prevention depends on consistent biofilm control between professional maintenance visits.
Lumoral is designed as a home-use, light-activated antibacterial method that helps patients manage oral biofilm between clinical appointments. The collaboration will examine how such a method can be integrated into structured preventive care pathways across the full implant journey: preparation before treatment, support during the maintenance phase, and long-term protection of peri-implant health.
Focus of the collaboration
The research project intends to build a close clinical and scientific collaboration centred on clinical understanding, knowledge exchange and the advancement of preventive implant care, rather than on any single product application. Anticipated areas of joint work include the development of structured preventive protocols for implant patients, contribution to the clinical evidence base for antibacterial home care in peri-implant maintenance, and professional education for clinicians on the role of prevention in lasting implant outcomes.
For clinicians, the ambition is to clarify how a preventive home-use layer can complement professional maintenance. For patients, the aim is to make preventive care around implants easier to understand, access and sustain over time. The collaboration draws on ABOC’s education and research infrastructure, including the Brånemark Academy, to support clinical dialogue, knowledge exchange and scientific development within the international implantology community.
