$1.5bn Anthropic Settlement Approved
The US District Court has formally approved the settlement of $1.5bn in the class action of Bartz et al vs. Anthropic pertaining to Anthropic training its AI models on content it had not purchased. Bloomsbury confirms that it is among the beneficiaries of the Anthropic settlement and will receive settlement spread over several payments estimated to start in the second half of the financial year.
The Court has listed 14,087 Bloomsbury titles as within the settlement and the proposed settlement is for about $3,000 for each work (less attorney fees and other expenses as described in the court document in the link below) to be divided equally between the author and the publisher.
Bloomsbury had £29.2m net cash as at 28 February 2026. Bloomsbury's capital allocation priorities are organic investment, debt repayment to reduce interest costs, dividend payments and bolt-on acquisition opportunities.
